Welcome to Inscape Design College
As we approach three decades of offering excellence in education, by design, we are reminded that the reason for our existence is our people.

Established in 1981 by Harry Edmonds and Cherry Whitehead, we are still the oldest privately-owned multi-disciplinary design college in South Africa.

Rick Edmonds, Principal

It is our great staff and our talented students that have made us one of South Africa's leading design colleges.

We invite you to Design your Life.
Rick Edmonds, Principal.

Who is Inscape registered with, and will my qualification be internationally recognised?
All private Higher Education institutions are required by law to be (1) registered by the Department of Education. Their qualifications must also be (2) registered on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) by South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) and they must be (3) accredited by the Council on Higher Education (CHE).

We are very proud to say that we meet all these requirements. Inscape Design College was registered with the Department of Education in 2000 under the Higher Education Act of 1997, for the NQF level 7 Bachelor of Design degree and level 6 diplomas in Interior Design and Graphic Design.
  • Our Department of Education Higher Education registration number is 2000/HE07/002.
  • Our Bachelor of Design and Diploma programmes are accredited by the CHE
    • In their 2003 report, the CHE praised us with: "The link with and involvement of industry experts in the design of the programme as well as in teaching is highly commendable...
"The programme materials are impressively set up and cohere with the outcomes of the programmes. Good staff / learner ratios, and so are contact hours with students..."
  • Your Design degree or diploma will be internationally recognised as it is registered with SAQA on the NQF

Inscape is also the first and only private college to have its Architectural Draughting course and the technical documentation module of its Interior Design course validated by SACAP (the Architectural Council)

Do the courses meet real-world needs?
We want to make sure that you have the best possible chance of a great career once you are qualified. So we have put the following in place:

  • all the courses are career-oriented (this means that our courses meet market needs because we consult with industry experts regulary),
  • our lecturers are for the most part experienced and successful practitioners who enjoy lecturing as much as they do working. Classes are geared towards guiding students, rather than just lecturing them,
  • to ensure that our students are able to apply their knowledge, we ensure that all design students work on true-to-life projects. The work is given to the students by real designers, who also mark the projects once they are completed.

If you are a design student: in your third year you will be expected to spend at least six weeks in in-service training at a company in your chosen industry.
The design courses include non-creative subjects like project management, business management, as well as marketing.
Inscape was the first college in South Africa to integrate computer graphics and CAD into its design courses.
CAD is also included in the Architectural Draughting and Interior Decorating courses.

How do the classes work?

  • Small classes - a maximum of 20 per class with individualised attention, contribute to the high standard of our students' work.
  • Inscape Design College believes that people perform best when they are happy. So our premises have been chosen for their atmosphere where even those with serious social lives enjoy learning – each campus has its own special character.
  • Design students attend lecture sessions each weekday. Sixteen to twenty hours a week is also spent in unsupervised practical and research work.
  • Draughting and Decorating students attend two part-time lecture sessions a week. Six to eight hours a week is spent in unsupervised practical and research work.
  • Our calendar is similar to that of the Department of Education.

Leadership and social responsibility

Be the change you want to see in the world –....... Mahatma Ghandi
Inscape has to taken these words to heart.

Within our community and surroundings, Inscape identifies various areas of social need. We then approach these organisations to see how we can benefit them, to commit with immediate effect and long term benefit; in making a continuous and meaningful contribution to their specific need.
We do this not only to benefit our community, but to inspire and cultivate a socially conscious student, one we hope will in turn take to their future work place an ethos to stand out and make a difference.

The students get directly involved with the organisation, from the planning of activities right through to the implementation and execution of the various actions.
Feedback from participating students is over-whelming; good intentions have become measurable actions. The students, as individuals, feel that they have the opportunity to “make a difference”; that a selfless act needs no reward.

Among the current initiatives at the college are: Recycling within the college space, the building surroundings and surrounding community; Providing educational, environmental and creative support to local community schools.
