Admission Policy

Inscape Design College is registered to offer higher education diploma and degree programmes in Design.

Legislation requires that applicants wishing to enrol in a higher education programme meet certain minimum criteria.

Inscape will also admit applicants via CAT and RPL assessment.

Applicants who have successfully completed Grade 12 with the subjects: art or Design and preferably mathematics (or similar) usually have a suitable academic background for admission to a Design programme, but each applicant is interviewed and each is considered on individual merit.

A person who does not have Grade 12 art but who has a developed artistic talent and problem solving ability may be admitted to the Design Foundation access programme.

Admission Procedures

legislative requirements

In terms of current legislation[1], applicants wishing to enrol in a higher education programme must meet the following minimum criteria:

·         to enrol in a Bachelors degree in a Design programme “the minimum admission requirement is a National Senior Certificate (NSC) as certified by Umalusi with an achievement rating of 4 (Adequate Achievement, 50-59%) or better in four subjects chosen from the following recognised 20-credit NSC subjects (the designated subject list).” The certificate must state that "the candidate meets the minimum requirements for a degree...".

·         to enrol in a Diploma in a Design programme “The minimum admission requirement is a National Senior Certificate (NSC) ... as certified by Umalusi, coupled with an achievement rating of 3 (Moderate Achievement, 40-49%) or better in four recognised NSC 20-credit subjects.” The certificate must state that "the candidate meets the minimum requirements for a diploma...".

If at enrolment, the applicant does not meet the requirements for admission into the degree programme, s/he will be enrolled by default into the diploma programme.  If it is subsequently found that the student does not qualify for admission into the diploma programme, Inscape shall not be permitted to award a qualification that will be recognised by the Department of Education as a valid qualification.

application

The attributes sought in an applicant for a Design programme are: the ability to communicate well, an inquiring mind, problem solving abilities, personal discipline, creativity, an aesthetic sensibility and perhaps most important, the right attitude.

enrolment

·         The prospective student completes the Contact of Enrolment in full and, if they are under the age of 21, it must be co-signed by their parent or guardian,

·         The applicant returns the Contact of Enrolment form and, if necessary the Debit Order & Credit Card Authority forms, together with proof of payment of the enrolment fee, and two ID photos to the college,

·         Once completed, the Contract of Enrolment checklist is checked by the college secretary and submitted to the financial officer together with proof of payment of the enrolment fee,

·         The financial officer receipts enrolment fee and capture the details thereof on the Contract of Enrolment,

·         The student’s details are captured on the enrolment register and onto the accounting program and database.  The Contract of Enrolment is scanned and loaded into the database,

·         The Confirmation of Enrolment letter is generated from the database program and this together with a copy of the Contract of Enrolment are either given or posted to the student,

·         The original Contract of Enrolment is sent to the head office for archiving,

·         Contracts of Enrolment that have been faxed to the college are replaced with the original documents when the student starts classes,

·         If they have not done so before, students bring a certified copy of their Grade 12 / National Senior Certificates to the college secretary during orientation week. The college secretary checks that she has received all matriculation certificates and files them with the first year students’ Contract of Enrolment by the end of February each year.
