INSCAPE DESIGN COLLEGE
Policy and Procedures for Student Competitions R1.1
2006/06/06
DESIGN PROGRAMMES
Competitions are an important part of the Inscape syllabus.
They expose students to the realities of the world outside the college
Relevant competitions are integrated into the syllabus
Policy with regard to Competitions
Students may be expected to participate in one or more competitions each year, provided that the Programme Co-coordinator believes that they may be accommodated into the existing timetable. The lecturers will obviously also assess the benefits to both the students and the college of participation before incorporating such competitions. In these cases the Academic Manager must be advised of such decisions.
When a competition is included in the syllabus, the sponsoring company must enter an agreement with Inscape wherein it agrees that the students interests will not be compromised (students retain their rights to their work unless an agreement is entered into where the student receives fair compensation)
The results of successful competitions will, where appropriate, be used for marketing and promotion purposes where deemed suitable by the Principal. The sponsor of the competition will be encouraged to make a donation to the college, typically in the form of a contribution to the resource centre, in the event that one of its students is a winner.
Procedures for Competitions
When the college is approached by a person or company (organiser) proposing to offer a competition to Inscape students, or someone at the college proposes that Inscape students participate in a competition, four steps are required:
¨ The brief for the competition must be clearly detailed on the Inscape Competition Application form, or professionally formulated by the organiser, in writing, providing at least the information on the Inscape Competition Application form and this submitted to the relevant Programme Co-ordinator,
¨ The Programme Co-ordinator must consider the proposed competition to establish 1) its relevance to the programme, and 2) whether it can be accommodated in the syllabus,
¨ If the competition is to be held, an agreement must be entered into between Inscape and the organiser - unless the competition is a recognised competition, run by a reputable company – wherein the organiser undertakes to 1) brief the students, 2) monitor the students progress (on at least one occasion during the design process), 3) assess the students presentation upon completion and 4) award a suitable reward to the winning student(s). Inscape undertakes to direct the students throughout the design process and ensure that the students present acceptable designs to the organiser,
¨ The organiser and the college must perform the commitments undertaken in the agreement above.
Where Inscape students undertake competitions outside the syllabus but in their capacity as Inscape students, the college expects the organiser not to abuse the fact that students may be naïve with regard to contracts and remuneration.
Where the services of Inscape students are employed by a company or individual outside the college syllabus, such work should not be undertaken free of charge; students must be compensated for materials and consumables used and must be paid a fair ‘student’ fee for their efforts. This is to prevent exploitation of students who are often easy prey as cheap labour.

o The winner must complete the chosen solution to the full satisfaction of the client.
The client shall award a prize to the winning student/s as follows:
